Pass Your Piss Test

What happens with positive drug test results if the drug is prescribed for a medical condition?

My husband is an over-the-road truck driver who is prescribed Ritalin for mild adult ADHD. He takes 20 mg. a day in the morning. Assuming this will show up in a random drug test that his trucking company requires now and then, can he get in any kind of trouble? I would think the fact it is prescribed would cover him, but just want an idea what to expect.

If he has a LEGAL doctors prescription, then he is covered. All he has to do is show that to his boss.

As long as he is prescribed it, he will be fine. However before he takes the test he should tell his boss that he is on a medication in case it shows up.

When you go to take a drug test, the nurse or whoever is administering usually has you fill out a form and asks what drugs you are taking, including over the counter, herbals and perscription drugs. Your husband will tell them… they may ask for a perscription or have the doctor sign something saying that he is perscribed ritilan. nothing will happen to him… drug tests only test for illegal drugs and abuse of perscription drugs. Taking drugs as perscribed is fine.

As long as he has a current, legal prescription from a doctor in the U.S., he will have no problems provided the doctor did not place any restrictions on his activities while taking the drug. (ie; no driving, ect.) Another point, it is too expensive for companies to test for individual prescription drugs. In general, a company will only test for marijuana, cocaine, THC and meth. High amounts of alcohol consumption will also appear in a standard drug test.

the answer from Taylor’s mom is wrong, if a company has a policy of no drugs in the system they can terminate him. even if he shows his boss the script. now his boss will have to send it to company lawyers because it will then become a risk management issue and that will require evidence of what the medication does to him and what happens if he does not take it. please remember that it will not be up to him to say “i work fine without it” they will go solely on the doctors notes and pdr description of the drug and it’s side affects. i have worked in risk management for 18 years and this is a big issue. there are lots of reasons for this like what if he loses control and has an accident? what if there is loss of life? prpoerty damage or both?
