Overview:
Anxiety is a serious social problem. It is the most common mental disorder, affecting 18% of women and 11% of men (ABS: 2007). It is more than twice as common as depression or substance abuse, with over a million Australians seeking treatment for anxiety per year. As anxiety worsens people often quit work, go on disability, and become depressed, hospitalised, or dependent on alcohol or drugs. Much of this can be
prevented with effective intervention.

This workshop, run by Dr Sallee McLaren aims to provide both a theoretical and practical solution to overcoming anxiety. The workshop begins with an overview of current neurological research relevant to learned fear and the development of anxiety. Next a working model and framework is presented that is grounded in the research literature, doctoral research, and more than 15 years experience in private practice that optimises the strengths of other treatment approaches (such as BT, CBT and ACT) while addressing some of their limitations. The working model is framed in terms of ‘Smart Therapy’ (ST) and is documented in the presenter’s book entitled Don’t Panic You Can Overcome Anxiety Without Drugs (2004). ST emphasises the role of CRF in activating anxiety symptoms following stressful life events and the role of both avoidance and voluntary prefrontal attentional focus on anxiety phenomena in terms of building neural circuitry and
consolidating brain maps, and the resulting growth patterns in synaptic terminals, leading to excessive memory retrieval and reactivation of fear circuits. In this way, a self-reinforcing cycle of anxiety is maintained. Workshop participants will then be taught various strategies that assist clients to control their physiological, mental and behavioural anxiety symptoms and there will be opportunities to practice these skills both individually and in dyads.

Participants will learn about the importance of clients not being mentally passive in relation to their anxiety symptoms and how to help empower clients through assertion skills and neurological knowledge to become
more proactive agents in the recovery process. Finally, participants will learn some strategies to help prevent future relapse of anxiety symptoms.

3.15 – 4.00pm Empowering clients by developing assertion skills and reducing mental passivity. This includes both a theoretical analysis of assertion and skills in teaching assertion to clients. If time permits, there will also be an opportunity to practice assertion exercises in dyads.

About the Presenter:
For the past 15 years Dr Sallee McLaren has worked as a Clinical Psychologist in Private Practice. She currently employs two clinical psychologists, two psychologists and one Personal Assistant. Her clinical work has involved enormous diversity in terms of age, SES, cultural background, psychological and neuropsychological profile. She has worked
extensively with both adults and adolescents. In the course of her professional practice, she has developed therapy programs as required, specifically targeting anxiety, depression, bullying, drug and alcohol over-use, gambling, chronic pain, low self-esteem, psychosis and eating disorders.

She has focused her work specifically upon anxiety and she has seen thousands of clients with all types of anxiety disorders. Her work has been strongly sought after by anxiety sufferers in the community.
Much of her specialised training in psychology, particularly at Honours and Doctorate level was focused on brain and memory research. As part of her Doctoral research in psychology she completed two large-scale studies and one experimental design study investigating causative, biochemical and maintenance factors in anxiety disorders amongst both clinical and non-clinical populations.

Sallee’s general psychological training in the Professional Doctorate program at La Trobe University and then later worked at the University of Melbourne, was essentially based upon Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). In the course of her professional practice she has developed her own framework and model called Smart Therapy (ST) which has many
similarities with CBT but it is based more strongly on neurological research and emphasizes the role of the pre-frontal cortex in consolidating long-term memory and neural reinforcement, and in structuring and directing behaviour in a disciplined manner. The model also emphasizes the importance of brain plasticity in neural pathway strengthening of
desired brain habits and utilizes methods which deliberately encourage weakening of neural pathways for undesired brain habits (such as rumination about anxiety). Her approach is solution-focused, systematic, easy-to-follow, and highly effective. Most people that she sees in her Private Practice get over their anxiety very quickly and permanently making it possible to then deal with more substantive real-life problems. Sallee is currently training other clinicians in her ST method. Sallee is based in Victoria.
